Museums
The Hague offers an extensive collection of paintings by the 'old' and 'modern' masters. 'The Hague Collection' is housed in six Hague museums. Together, these separate collections constitute five centuries of the art of painting. The Hague boasts various famous paintings such as 'Gezicht op Delft' by Johannes Vermeer and 'Victory Boogie Woogie' by Piet Mondriaan. Since the end of 2002, The Hague has also housed three brand-new museums: the Escher Museum, the Museum of Photography (Fotomuseum) and the GEM (Museum of Contemporary Art).

Architecture
When entering the city by car, the first thing you see is the imposing and impressive skyline of The Hague. In the future, more buildings will be added, which will give the city business centre a modern and sleek look. But The Hague is a city of many faces. In the surroundings of the big white city hall designed by Richard Meijer lies the modern centre for business and government with its high buildings and modern squares. Lovers of historical architecture can enjoy it to their hearts' content in the grand old streets near the Binnenhof and the Noordeinde Palace. The architect H.P. Berlage also built a number of striking buildings in The Hague, including the Gemeentemuseum The Hague.

Galleries & art shops
After visiting a museum, just stop by one of the many galleries and art shops in The Hague. Art lovers will find a particularly wide range of these round the Denneweg, the Frederikstraat, the Mesdagkwartier and the Noordeinde.

Dance & music
At the centre of the city the Dr. Anton Philipszaal, home to the Residentie Orkest and the Lucent Dans Theater, home to the Nederlands Dans Theater, are next to each other. They provide the city with a cultural ambiance of classical music and dance. Here, you can regularly see performances of classical and modern music. The quality of the dancers and choreographers of the National Dance Theatre is world-renowned.

Theatre
A few nationally renowned companies are based in The Hague like the Nationale Toneel, which performs in the beautiful classical Koninklijke Schouwburg (Royal Theatre). This company presents internationally known pieces by playwrights like Chekhov, Shakespeare and Ibsen. Another important company is Toneelgroep de Appel, with its theatre – a former riding school – in Scheveningen. For some plays, the stage is completely rebuilt to integrate the setting with the play. Theater Zwembad de Regentes is also unique; here, the actors perform their plays in what was once a swimming pool.
