The Scheveningen boulevard is even more attractive because of the new exhibition mounted by the Museum Beelden aan Zee (Sculptures by the Sea). The new public sculpture terrace is called ‘SprookjesBeelden aan Zee’ (‘FairytaleSculptures by the Sea’). It boasts a balcony, steps, small islands, benches and pedestals for 23 enchanting sculptures by New York sculptor Tom Otterness. The objects on display include three large and twenty smaller sculptures and include ‘Herring Eater’ and ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Admission to the sculpture terrace is free.Tom Otterness’s sculptures
Otterness’s sculptures, known from various large sculpture projects in the United States, have been cast in bronze and finished with a glossy patina ‘skin’. World-famous fairytales are the subjects of many of his sculptures. Some of the works on display relate to the surroundings. Because of the humorous slant, the work of the sculptor appeals to young and old. Otterness is critical of the social structure, which he expresses in some of his works. His work became well known because the sculptures are mainly displayed in subway stations and near famous buildings. His most famous creation, ‘The Real World’, is a garden project with human and animal figures in Battery Park in New York. |
