'The Stedelijk Museum is closed due to a large-scale renovation. The opening of the museum will take place somewhere in 2012. You can still enjoy some of the modern- and contemporary art at the Temporary Stedelijk. Find out where Temporary Stedelijk takes place during your stay in Holland.'
The Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art offers by far the best collection of modern art in Amsterdam, with an emphasis on paintings. A number of works are permanently on view from the museum's renowned collection of paintings and sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, graphic design, applied art and design and new media. A number of frequently changing exhibitions is always on view as well.
Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art is a dynamic museum that closely follows developments in art, particularly those of the second half of the 20th century. The spacious museum houses one of the major collections of modern art in the Netherlands. The permanent exhibition focuses on De Stijl, Cobra, Nouveau Realisme, Pop Art, Colorfield Painting and Zero and Minimal Art. A few of the more famous exponents of these styles are Picasso, Dutch painters Karel Appel and Piet Mondrian and French painters Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Chagall and Renoir.
You can find the Stedelijk Museum in the city center of Amsterdam next to the Van Gogh Museum and opposite the world famous Concertgebouw. You won't find a better place to enjoy modern and design in Amsterdam. Leidseplein Square, the Albert Cuyp market and the quarter De Pijp are just a few tram stops away from the Stedelijk Museum. De Pijp offers a few hundred cafes and restaurants, where you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.
