KNSM Island

KNSM Island lies in the eastern dock area of Amsterdam. Until the 1980s the area was in use as a harbor. Gone are those days. Lots and lots of new buildings were erected instead. The former harbor has been urbanized. If you like modern architecture, we warmly recommend you visit this island.
KNSM Island
KNSM Island is an artificial peninsula. From 1902 the area has been exploited by KNSM - the Royal Dutch Steamship Company. Passenger and cargo ships sailed to and from this island. Until the 1960s the Steamship Company did well, after which it had to downscale its activities. The curtain fell for KNSM in 1977. After the company left, the island became a wasteland. Squatters and city nomads took over. After a number of years the city council decided to build new homes in the area. And prestigious homes they are too! KNSM Island is now a much sought-after residential area with striking architecture.
Award winning
KNSM Island boasts striking modern architecture. The ‘Piraeus’ condominium has won an award. The tall building next to ‘Piraeus’ is a design of Belgian architect Bruno Albert. This eye-catching design is rich in details and features post-modern influences. The monumental gate at the southern entrance is absolutely stunning. Its two architects received the Merkelbach Award for ‘Most Striking New Building in Amsterdam’.
The old buildings fit in really well with the new. One of these old buildings is ‘Loods 6’. This former harbormaster’s office now houses the Open Harbor Museum. The layout of and type of buildings on KNSM Island were carefully considered.
Sail
If you are a lover of boats, KNSM Island is the place for you. Not just because of its shipping past. Every five years this harbor area of Amsterdam hosts the Sail event. A great many Tall Ships dot the harbor. During the Sail event hundreds of other ships can be admired. The program also offers a range of cultural activities. The final day of the Sail event, Sunday, is traditionally the highlight. It features an impressive parade of historical ships, followed by performances by orchestras and the Band of the Royal Marines. Each Sail day is concluded with spectacular fireworks. It might seem a long way off, but if you would like to be a part of this splendid nautical event, you know where to come to in 2010!
Major feature
A major feature of KNSM Island are the old buildings which have been preserved. The island has also retained its maritime character; many houseboats and other boats are moored at the quays. The area is a fine example of how old and new can go hand in hand.
