Hotel New York / Head office of Holland America Line

This building symbolised the departure from Holland of thousands of families in search of a new life. Today it draws many people to Rotterdam to stay in one of the many original hotel rooms.
Impressive building
This building, once the head office of the Holland America Line (HAL) dates back to 1901. In 1908 and 1919 the original design was expanded with Jugendstil ornaments and the characteristic, copper-covered towers. The facade is decorated with scenes from the shipping world and situations inspired by the various continents. It is an impressive building. Perhaps some of the departing emigrants began to have doubts when, standing at the railing of the ship, they watched the high facades of Rotterdam's buildings disappear.
Hotel and restaurant
After ten years of disuse the building was completely rebuilt in 1993 and turned into a hotel. Today, a large restaurant is located on the ground floor. The hotel lobby has a kiosk which sells Rotterdam souvenirs. A magnificent wrought-iron stairway leads to the hotel rooms, all of which differ in size, furnishing and color. In the former executive rooms, with rosewood and walnut panelling, the original carpets with Art Nouveau motifs have been restored.
Water taxi
This unique building is an experience in itself. Do see it in Rotterdam style. Take a water taxi from the taxi jetty next to the building of the Royal Rowing and Sailing Association, the Maas River in Veerhaven or from the taxi jetty next to the Maritime Museum in Leuvehaven.
