Shipyard ‘De Delft’

Shipyard De Delft

A replica of an 18th-century ship-of-the-line is being constructed on shipyard De Delft. Six days per week you can see how this large ship is taking shape, slowly but surely.

Life at sea

The exhibition acquaints you with the construction, the history, life at sea, the Battle of Camperduin and much more. The ten-minute-long film ‘The many lives of De Delft’ will take you back to the 18th century for a while.

Gangway and workshops

From a gangway you can see into the various workshops where the parts for the ship are being made. Because people are not always at work in all workshops, monitors above the workshops screen short, informative films on the activities in the various workshops. An exposition along the gangway presents the items members of Scheveningen Diving Club Sirene have found in the shipwreck. These objects range from a plate to a piece of tarpaulin.

Smell the water

When you walk down the gangway you will come to the quay, where you can smell the water. The ship is being built on the quay, next to the pontoon with the timber stocks. The parts that have been constructed in the workshops are hoisted in place with the crane.

An historic attraction in a modern city. At the shipyard, 200 meter from the original location in Delfshaven, a reconstruction of the 18th Century warship ‘Delft’ is built. On the quay the keel and frames give an impression of the enormous dimensions of the ship to be. In the ornament carving shop, the block shop, the forge and rigging loft craftsmen are working on the components of the replica as well as on the captain launch. Meanwhile they completed the capstan, steering wheel and night-house. Currently the carvers face their next challenge; the figurehead – a lion with a height of almost 5 meter. In the museum guides take visitors back to the 18th Century along an image gallery, rebuilt officers- and crew accommodations, showcases with tools and objects of the original ‘Delft’ from the bottom of the North Sea to tell about the history of the ship and shipbuilding. Young visitors have the chance to discover the history by means of a puzzle excursion. For larger (school) groups (min. 15 persons) special educational arrangements can be booked. Under professional guidance the children take part interactively to e.g. magnetising a compass needle, fixing a route, testing the buoyancy of wood, etc. Regularly exhibitions with a special topic are organized.

For a coffee with pastry on the terrace with splendid view on the river Maas, for a lunch or just a drink (cosy near the open fire) the staff is ready to serve the guests in the restaurant (80 seats). But, also for meetings, presentations, company- and family outings the shipyard can serve as a unique setting.
