  • Excellent public transport to and from all major Dutch cities
  • Amsterdam, The Hague, the beach and tulip region accessible within 20 minutes

By air

Leiden has the advantage of being close to two major airports. Holland’s main airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, is only a 15-minute train ride from Leiden. Trains depart numerous times each hour. A taxi can get you to the city centre of Leiden in approximately the same amount of time, but that depends highly on the traffic. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is a 25-minute ride by public transport or taxi.

By train

The train station in Leiden is one of the major train hubs in Holland, making Leiden easily accessible from anywhere in the country. Amsterdam and Rotterdam are a 35-minute train ride away and The Hague can be reached in only 10 minutes. Leiden’s train station is located right in the city, making it an easy stroll to the city centre and all the major hotels and venues.

By road

Leiden is easily accessible by car (or taxi) due to the two highways passing by. Be aware though that the historic city centre is virtually car-free. If you travel to Leiden by car it is a good idea to park at one of the car parks just outside the city centre. The biggest car park in Leiden is on the Haagweg. It serves as a ‘Park & Ride’ facility. During the day and in the evening free shuttle buses operate between the car park and the city centre. Special arrangements can be made for groups of visitors so that you are always assured of easy transport to the city centre.

Public bus service is available in Leiden and the surrounding region. Since Leiden is a very compact city it is very easy to get around by foot or bike though - the two preferred modes of transportation of locals.
