Transport of bicycles

Bicycle on a car roof

By plane

In general, it is possible to take your bicycle on the plane. This is done by informing the airline of your intentions at the time of the booking and giving them details such as the weight, in kilos/pounds, of your bicycle. The bike must be properly packed and special packing boxes can be obtained at the airports. The cost for the transportation of your bicycle will be charged as excess baggage. Contact the airline you are flying with for further details.

Bicycle on the train

Would you like to cover some of your routes through Holland by train? In many cases this is possible. At over 300 stations you can simply take your bike along on the train.

This is how it works. In addition to buying a train ticket for yourself, you buy one for your bike, too. If the ticket office is closed you can buy tickets from the station's vending machine. Then you put the bike in the train yourself, in the baggage car, easy to identify by its blue sticker showing a bike above one of the doors. Don't leave bags and parcels with the bike. Take them off ahead of time. It's also a good idea to park your bike as securely as possible in the baggage car. Some trains have special clamps for this purpose.

In July and August you can take your bike whenever you want, but during the rest of the year there are a few limitations. On workdays, during morning and evening rushhours (6:30 to 9 am and 4:30 to 6 pm), you can't take your bike on the train. A ticket (valid for the entire day) costs about EUR 6.00.
