Beaches and dunes

The Dutch coast is more than 300 kilometers long and cannot be compared to any other coast in the world. There are plenty of possibilities to explore the beaches and the dunes behind them on foot.
Walking along the beach
The beach is not only attractive when the sun shines. Have you ever walked on the beach with a westerly wind bellowing past your ears, blowing up the fine sand, the waves splashing and foaming? It’s possible to walk along the beach at all seaside resorts and sometimes even return through the dunes. Inquire at the local VVV (Tourist Information Office) about the various possibilities.
Walking through the dunes
Holland has a long coastline with a spectacular dune area behind it. The dunes are a wonderful place to take a relaxing walk and breathe in the salty sea air. The dunes are also quite fragile. This explains why some areas closed to the public. These areas are marked by signs or fences. In some places you may have to pay a small fee to walk through the dunes. The VVV (Tourist Information Office) in the various seaside resorts can provide detailed information on walking through the dunes.
Walking across mud flats
Walking across the mud flats means walking across the bottom of the Wadden Sea. During the various walking tours, you’ll become acquainted with the mud flats, with their tidal marshes, sandbanks, channels, plants and birds. You may even see a few seals. The organizations offering mud flat walks have a number of different tours to choose from, ranging from three to five hours. More information about these walking tours can be obtained at the tourist information offices in the towns along the Wadden Sea, such as Harlingen in the province of Friesland.
