Hoek van Holland

Children playing on the beach

Close to the industrial districts of Europoort and Rotterdam lies Hook of Holland. It is literally situated on a corner - if you turn left from the North Sea beach onto the promenade which runs along the Nieuwe Waterweg - the access river to the harbour of Rotterdam - you can almost touch the ships that sail past. For this reason, the promenade attracts many visitors.

Development of the beach

The construction of the longitudinal embankments and the deepening of the channels in the North Sea and Nieuwe Waterweg back in the seventies produced a lot of sand. This sand was used to raise the coast of Hook of Holland and a large nature reserve thus developed. Despite its vicinity to Europoort, the area has preserved its tranquillity and now offers numerous recreational opportunities. A stay in Hook of Holland does of course mean the city of Rotterdam is only a few miles away where it is possible to take a round trip of the harbours by boat.
