Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam





The Boijmans is the only museum in Holland that covers the 14th century to the present in its art collection. It is also the only museum with works by the Dutch master Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1510). The large collection of the museum includes works by many other Dutch and Flemish masters, including Van Eyck, Brueghel, Lucas van Leyden and Rembrandt and prints and drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Goya and Durer. Old masters from the Dutch Golden Age such as Dou, Rubens, Hals, Steen and Titian are represented here, as are modern painters such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, Magritte, Kandinsky and Salvador Dali.
The Collection
Four areas can be identified in the museum. A collection of Old Masters, a Print collection, a Decorative Art & Design department and a Modern Art collection. These collections contain drawings, paintings, old clocks, glass, pewter, silver, lace, furniture, ceramics and prints.
Old Masters
The collection of Old Masters provides a fine survey of West European art from the14th century onward to the middle of the 19th century. In particular 15th- and 16th- of the Northern and Southern Netherlands and 17th century Dutch painting are represented well and include painters such as Van Eyck, Rubens and Rembrandt.
Printing Collection
In addition to an extensive collection of graphics, the Printing Room also displays one of the world's most important collections of drawings. Numerous styles from the Middle Ages to the present day are on exhibit.
Decorative Art & Design
In the collection Decorative Art and Design, both precious ornamental objects and everyday utensils dating from medieval times up to today are exhibited. Important are the collections of majolica, pewter, silver, glass, pre- industrial utensils and modern decorative art. In recent years, the museum also emphasizes Industrial Design.
Modern Art
Over time the collection of Modern Classics and Contemporary Art of Boijmans Van Beuningen has become one of the major collections of the Netherlands. It covers the period from 1850 up to the present time in paintings and sculptures. Recent German and American art and contemporary sculpture is also part of the collection.
The museum features permanent and changing exhibitions, films, lectures and courses. The museum shop is a treasure trove of books, reproductions and designer products. You can enjoy a moment to relax in Brasserie Boijmans, with its view of the sculpture garden.
