For most people, Edam is synonymous with cheese. This is no surprise, as the popular round Edam cheeses have been exported to all corners of the world for centuries. The handful of remaining cheese warehouses keep the memory of this aromatic and colorful past alive. But this town on the former Zuider Zee (IJsselmeer) has more to offer than cheese alone!
Rich history
Edam is a city with a rich history, lovely façades, squares, bridges, cheese warehouses, attractive shopping streets and inviting outdoor cafés. The city walk 'A Stroll through Edam' is organized through the VVV (Tourist Information Office) in Edam and takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Evening cheese market
Try to plan your visit to Edam on a Wednesday in July or August. This is when the traditional cheese market is held. The cheese market takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is also an evening cheese market on the first Saturday in August.
