The mills at Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk is one of the best known sights of Holland. Images of this unique windmill landscape are featured in every photo book on Holland. In 1997 the Kinderdijk mills were placed on Unesco’s World Heritage List.
19 Windmills
At Kinderdijk, nineteen windmills are lined up in two opposite rows. The round brick windmills on one side drain the Nederwaard. On the opposite side, the octagon windmills keep the Overwaard from being flooded.
Spectacular sight
During July and August all the windmills operate on Saturdays, and sometimes also on other days. Make sure you don’t forget to bring your camera when you visit Kinderdijk. When the windmills are in operation, they offer a spectacular sight.
Some of these windmills are open to the public. They will give you a good impression of how the millers and their families used to live.
