The Schermer Museum Mill

Of the original 52 windmills in the Schermer region only eleven remain. Volunteer millers now inhabit these windmills. One of the mills is a museum. Here you can see how windmills are built and operated.
The Museum Mill is a water mill which is still in operation. In 1634 drainage work started in the Schermer Lake. In order to transform this lake into fertile, arable land and to keep it dry, no less than 52 windmills were built. This resulted in the 'Schermer polder'. The polder was kept dry with the help of wind power up to 1927. Because of the relatively large difference in height (over 4 meters), a phased drainage system was used.
Volunteer Millers
Of the original 52 windmills in the Schermer region only eleven remain. Volunteer millers now inhabit these windmills. One of the mills, the Ondermill D, is a museum. Here you can see how windmills are built and operated. The living quarters of the mill are still in their original condition. You will get a good impression of life in and around a windmill.
