The Rietveld Schröder House

The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was commissioned by Truus Schröder-Schräder and designed by the architect Gerrit Rietveld. This small one-family house dates from 1924. It was unique back then and still is today. In 2000, UNESCO awarded the house World Heritage status.

Design of the House

Rietveld was a member of ‘De Stijl’ (The Style), an artistic movement with artists like Piet Mondrian, who searched for a new ideal of harmony and order. Compositions were made of straight lines and primary colors, plus black and white. The Rietveld Schröder House fits the ideals of The Style. It is the most influential domestic building of the early modern period.
