Choosing a style

Building the monument was a complex matter that symbolised the battle between neo-styles in the early nineteenth century. Some wanted a building in neo-Gothic style while others preferred a university building in the neo-Renaissance style because it fit in better with humanism.

A new clock

Eventually the proponents of the neo-Renaissance style won. Their victory resulted in a beautiful building with a facade rich in ornaments and painted ceilings and walls. A special clock was made in 2010 to celebrate the university’s 375th anniversary. It was named after the university’s first female student, Anna Maria van Schurman.
