Filmmakers bring 17th century to life

Since the reopening of Castle Amerongen in 2011, visitors have been amazed by the large-scale multimedia production “A Midsummer’s Day in 1680” by the filmmakers Peter Greenaway and Saskia Boddeke. This production brings the residents of the castle back to life in a theatrical manner. The residents may be seen in the various rooms in the castle: the noble residents and their servants, the kitchen maids and gardeners, chamber maids and midwives, lovers, English and German visitors, monarchists and republicans. Fascinating scenes are enacted against a background of the political situation at that time, namely that just following the Year of Disaster (“Rampjaar”) 1672, and leading up to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.

10 hectares of castle gardens

The surrounding gardens are also magnificent. A walk along the borders, past the rose garden, the children’s playhouse and the beautiful trees, including a 300-year-old oak, is definitely worth the effort. With a total area of 10 hectares (25 acres), four centuries of history are on display in the gardens.
