Bike rentals in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is an historic city, with many sites to see and places to visit. It isn't a huge city, as far as square miles go, but as a major international metropolis, it certainly isn't tiny either. Natives tend to take their bicycles for long rides, as the landscape is flat, easy to navigate, and crossed with bicycle routes and cycleways, which have their own traffic signals.

Further, parking a car can be pretty difficult and expensive here. Going native and renting a bicycle for the duration of your stay in Amsterdam may be the most cost-effective and fun way you can possibly see the city.

Where to rent bicycles in Amsterdam

Most bikes in Amsterdam are the old-fashioned one-speed bicycles with a back-pedal brake. This is a good choice for a novice cyclist because they’re relatively easy to operate. Rent a bike to get between the major tourist attractions; from Centraal Station to practically anywhere, or to explore the shops along the canals.

You can pick up an "Amsterdam on the bike" map from the tourist office. It covers all the routes, repair shops, restricted areas, and anything else you need to know before riding. Then go rent a bike and enjoy. Some of the major rental shops are:

  • Bike City in the Jordaan neighborhood – only Dutch bikes available, and they aim to disguise tourists as natives.
  • Damstraat Rent-a-Bike – located on Dam Street and a bit cheaper daily than Bike City.
  • MacBike Amsterdam – located at Centraal Station, bicycles are bright red and you will look like a tourist. This may be an advantage to the novice city-biker.
  • Mike's Bike Tours – offers daily rentals and also guided tours of both the city and the countryside.

Rates, deals, and other cyclists

Finding a bicycle rental shop in Amsterdam is not difficult. Rates range from about €11 a day to €15 a day. Sometimes guided tours are available at the rental shops, either through the shop or through a third-party vendor. Package tour deals also sometimes come with a bike rental in Amsterdam. Remember that bicycling is integral to Dutch culture and life, and expect other bikers to treat the bike as an extension of their body, riding fluently and offensively (in both senses of the word, in some cases). Cycle lanes are clearly marked for maximum safety for both cyclists and motorists.
