Boat tour Willem-Alexander and Máxima, 30 April

There was a lot of speculation: ‘Will the new king and queen tour the city by boat?’ Since the official announcement we know that our King in waiting Willem-Alexander and his wife, the future Queen Máxima, will be taking a boat tour on the water on 30 April. That means that many more people will be able to see the new royal pair on that day than would have been possible at Dam square.

A salute over the IJ

On 30 April in the evening they will board the ship near the EYE Film Institute and sail from there via the Oeverpark, along the IJ’s northerly banks to the head of the Java-eiland across from the “Muziekgebouw”. A salute will resound over the water between 20:30 and 21:00, concluding the official part of this festive day. There will be a big party at the Museumplein, however, already called the ‘King’s Ball’.

Royal barge

Others speculated whether the couple would sail on the famous ‘royal barge’. Unfortunately this rumour was denied. The high waves on the IJ (and possibly the many repairs required) have caused the organisers to select a different boat. If you were planning to take a boat to the IJ on that day, don’t – the IJ will be closed entirely to any other shipping.
