Since Holland has four seasons, the weather is always changing and there is always something you can say about it. And the Dutch really like to have a chat about the weather. While the Dutch are not a negative people, they always seem to have to complain about the weather.

‘Quite the weather, isn't it?

'The wind is blowing too hard or too softly, it’s too cold or too hot, too wet or too dry... and it’s rarely just right. And when it’s really hot in summer, they’ll say: ‘It’s either running or standing still, isn't it?' (a Dutch saying). And when a rain shower cools everything down, they’ll say: ‘The good weather never lasts, does it.’ And when autumn arrives, they’ll say: ‘Don’t you wish it was still summer?’

A nice chat

In other words, complaining about the weather is a favourite Dutch pastime. But please don’t take it too seriously. It seems to be a way to start up a nice chat when you really don’t know what else to talk about. Looking at it this way, it is a funny habit.
