Cycling through the fenlands

Cycling through the water-rich Weerribben landscape, you can still see traces of the peat excavation that resulted in this unique natural area. The ‘petgaten’ (ponds where peat was dredged up) and ‘legakkers’ (small strips of land on which peat was dumped to dry), for instance, or the typical mills and sod huts that accommodated peat diggers and their entire family. Today a rich variety of birds enjoys the biggest marshland area in Northwestern Europe. Why not stop at one of the birdwatching huts along the way to spot them?

Pleasant villages and port towns

While cycling through the famous water village of Giethoorn, it is hard to miss the many waterways. These were dug to transport peat and cane, for instance to Zuiderzee trading towns like Blokzijl. Beautiful thatched farms line the water. They were built on islands, as it were, and you can only reach them via small bridges or by crossing the water.

Enjoying the waterside

Take your time to enjoy the surroundings. The terraces of Het Doevehuis in Kalenberg (Kalenberg-Zuid 1) and several addresses in Giethoorn and Blokzijl make for a lovely place to enjoy the waterside.

Editor’s tip

Why not combine a cycling tour through Weerribben-Wieden and Giethoorn with a boat tour? Taking an electrical (‘whisper’) boat, punt, canoe or tour boat will let you experience the region in a very different way.
