In spring tens of thousands of people are drawn to the colours and perfumes of the ‘Bollenstreek’ or Dutch Flower Bulb Region. Millions of tulips and other flowers turn a big part of Holland into a patchwork of colour. Haarlem is surrounded by bulb fields and as such is a good starting point for a bicycle tour of the Bulb Region. Avoid the bottlenecks to the Keukenhof; the 18 kilometre bicycle ride takes about 90 minutes.
The starting point of the bicycle itinerary is the Grote Markt, which you will leave past City Hall into the Koningstraat. The Koningstraat turns into the Gierstraat and Grote Houtstraat. Cross the bridge and continue on the Dreef along the city park. The Dreef turns into the Fonteinenlaan, Zuiderhoutlaan and Heemsteedse Dreef respectively. Follow the bend in the road to the left, where the Heemsteedse Dreef becomes the Cruquiusweg. Cross the bridge and turn immediately right , continuing along the water on the Bennebroekerdijk. The first flower bulb fields start to appear to your left. After a few kilometres cross the first bridge to the Meerweg, which turns into the Bennebroekerlaan and Zwarteweg. Then turn left onto the Leidsevaart. Follow the Leidsevaart and you will find yourself riding into a sea of flowers. The Leidsevaart runs straight through the heart of the Bulb Region. After several kilometres turn left into the Stationsweg; you have reached the Keukenhof.
From the Keukenhof continue on the Stationsweg. At the roundabout turn left into the Heereweg. Turn right into the Leimuiderweg and cross the bridge. Turn immediately left onto the Hillegommerdijk. Continue along the water until you reach the Bennebroekerdijk. The return journey follows the same itinerary back.
