Rotterdam is an energetic city with harbour activities still visible close to the city center. Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe and handles over 7 million containers per year. With a bicycle and the fast Aqualiner ferry you can join in the action.

Start your cycle tour at the Aqualiner ferry stop (Willemskade, next to boat tour Spido). This pontoon is also used by the Waterbus ferry towards the Kinderdijk windmills and Dordrecht. Step on board with your bike and buy a ticket with the steward to the stop Heijplaat-RDM, your bike is free of charge.

Once you get off the ferry, go to the left on the street to the amazing Dokkaffee restaurant for some quality coffee or healthy sandwich. This restaurant was a canteen for the former workers from the large shipyard buildings around you.

Cycle south towards the ‘Waalhavenweg’ and keep the water to your left. You will start to see more activities and large containers vessels operating at your feet. Keep going along the waterfront and at the end of the ‘Waalhaven’ head back north towards the city center. Keep following the main road and stay as close to the water as possible. Head left when you see the Metro overpass.

You are now cycling around the ‘Maashaven’ which is used by many inshore vessels, waiting for their next trip. Take a left turn to stay at the waterfront and cycle all the way to the end of the pier. You’ll now arrive in the Katendrecht area and see the famous “SteamShip Rotterdam” moored here. Have a 50’s style cocktail on the top-deck of this former cruise ship is now a museum, restaurant and hotel.

After your visit here go to the Aqualiner stop Katendrecht. Go and visit the “Deliplein” with some nice bars and the most famous tattoo shop in Rotterdam “Tattoo Bob”. The Aqualiner ferry will take you back to the Erasmusbrug stop. To finish up, go underneath the large Erasmusbrug bridge to café “Prachtig”, a Dutch word for beautiful, as was your tour. If you don’t have any stops you can cycle this tour easily in one and a half hour.
