Starplayers

Players, such as Johan Cruijff, Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Ruud Gullit, Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp, Edgar Davids, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Edwin van der Sar, enjoy a worldwide reputation. Starplayers of the national team that reached the 2010 World Cup are for example Arjen Robben (Bayern Munchen), Wesley Sneijder (Internazionale), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Rafael van der Vaart (Tottenham Hotspur) and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (FC Schalke 04).

‘Total Football’

Total football is the name given to a tactical football theory in which any outfield player can overtake the role of any other player in the team. Which means that every player should know how to attack, defend or play midfield, despite their position in the team. Players can move out of position, whilst being replaced by someone else from the team. A defender can suddenly be the attacker. The main effect is creating total confusion.

Rinus Michels

The inventor of this game is Rinus Michels, a famous Dutch coach. Between 1971 and 1973 he won the national league, the KNVB cup, European Cup, European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup with his team Ajax. With Michels as a coach of the national team, Oranje became runner-up during the World Championship in 1974 and 1978 and won the European Cup in 1988.

World Cup 2010

Reaching the final of the World Cup in South Africa is a fantastic new highlight in a long and impressive football history. For some it came as a surprise, for others like the coach Bert van Marwijk it was the only option.

"If I had the slightest idea that we could not win the World Cup, I would just stay at home."
Bert van Marwijk, coach
