Waalsdorpervlakte

Meijendel nature reserve also has black pages in its history. During WWII several hundred resistance fighters were shot in the dunes by the German occupiers. A monument erected at Waalsdorpervlakte commemorates the victims with the inscription ‘1940-1945’ in its concrete ring, four gunshot stars and a bell cage.

Each year on May 4th, all victims of WWII are commemorated at Waalsdorpervlakte. A guard of honour stands near the concrete ring and the bell is sounded after two minutes of silence and the national anthem until the last person has passed the monument.

Pannenkoekenhuis Meyendel

Having cycled or walked through Meijendel, you will no doubt need a good meal. The Pannenkoekenhuis Meyendel is open seven days a week and serves delicious pancakes. In summer you can also enjoy a meal at the Wassenaarse Slag, the beach of Wassenaar which you can reach via Meijendel.

The staff of Dunea visitors centre will be happy to tell you more about the flora and fauna found in Meijendel nature reserve.
