Now open: Volkshotel

August 1, 2014

Volkshotel has a rich past - for 45 years it belonged to De Volkskrant - one of the biggest, most progressive Dutch newspapers. After the newspaper moved out, the empty building transformed. It became one of the largest creative hubs in Holland, where hundreds of creative minds found a place to work. On the seventh floor, young entrepreneurs gave the old journalist canteen a second life as club/restaurant Canvas - with its famous rooftop terrace.

Volkshotel takes this creative history into the future. Architect Steven Steenbruggen keeps the building as close to the original sixties design as possible. Whilst Interior Designer, Bas van Tol of Studio Müller Van Tol creates an interior full of magnified newspaper cut outs and original elements of steel, wood, concrete and glass. Simplicity enhances the materials and details throughout. With nine special rooms the Volkshotel is complete.

Art and culture are intertwined into the buildings history and will continue to play an important role. This coming year, Volkshotel joins forces with creative landmarks like Dekmantel Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event, Amsterdam Fringe Festival and Unseen Photo Fair.

Curious? The Volkshotel offer business, meeting and group facilities as well. Contact them for further details.
