Aboutone hundred years later, when the population of Amsterdam had grownsignificantly, a new church was founded on the Dam. It was called the Nieuwe Kerk orNew Church so the old St. Nicolaaskerk became commonly known as the ‘OudeKerk’. It was'Amsterdam’s living room’ for centuries. Rembrandt registered his intentionto marry here (known as ‘ondertrouw’), fishermen repaired their nets andSweelinck played the organ.

Functions

Todaychurch services are still held in the building but it is also used as a weddingvenue and regularly hosts exhibitions. It is a real attraction for tourists, whocombine it with a visit to the less sacred ‘Wallen’ red light district.
