After a long winter sleep the bats will have woken up, and most of the fortresses will be opened to the public again. We will celebrate the opening of this new fortress season. During and after this weekend you can enjoy plenty of exciting activities in the largest National Monument of the Netherlands. You can enjoy walking or cycling at the New Dutch Water Line, but there are also music and theater performances, tours and children's activities.

The New Dutch Water Line

The New Dutch Water Line is a  Defense Line that runs straight through the center of the Netherlands. It was built between 1815 and 1940 and stretches from Muiden to the Biesbosch. The Line consists of over fifty fortresses and six fortified towns, connected by more than a thousand military and water engineering objects in the surrounding open countryside.

Enjoying the Water Line

The New Dutch Water Line is a National Landscape, is recognized as the largest National Monument of the Netherlands, and is listed on the provisional list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Plenty of activities are  organized along the Water Line. You can also stay overnight, enjoy culinary delights or meetings in a fortress, castle or fortified city. At the very least, join the festive start of the Season of the Fortresses.
