Groningen, the northernmost province of Holland, is of course known for the city of Groningen, its beautiful capital, as well as its beautiful landscapes and nature. The province also boasts many extraordinary gardens that are definitely worth a visit.

Centuries old gardens

Borgtuinen (keep gardens), klosstertuinen (monastery gardens), slingertuinen with their meandering paths, the Hortus in Haren and Domies Toen in Pieterburen – these are all examples of beautiful gardens, some of which were created centuries ago. The design of the ter Apel monastery gardens, for instance, dates from the Middle Age!

Culture in nature

The Tuin & Kunsttiendaagse, a ten-day event revolving around gardens and cultures, uses the lovely gardens as a scene for art and culture. There are exhibitions, sculpture gardens, music performances, theatre shows, herbal workshops, and much more. It is a feast of art and culture against a backdrop of extraordinary gardens.  Contact the local tourist offices (VVV) for information about times and tickets.
