The welcoming historic town centre of Alkmaar has plenty of beautiful architecture and great shops to offer, but also a broad range of cosy cafes and restaurants. There are many atmospheric, authentic pubs and hip, trendy bars. So if you want to relax with a drink after visiting the cheese market or a stroll along the beautiful canals, there is ample choice. Café Prinsheerlijk. Houttil 22. A cosy, old-fashioned ‘brown’ pub on Waagplein square with a great terrace for warm summer days.

Café 't Hartje. Houttil 28. This has been a welcoming old-fashioned pub for years now, where you can have a cup of coffee in the morning and a stiff drink at night. They also have a large terrace on Waagplein square in summer.

Café Berrie's. Houttil 24. A cosy cafe on Waagplein square with live music on a regular basis and a salsa dance night on the first floor every Friday.

Café Het Kooltuintje. Kooltuin 11. A welcoming musical cafe featuring a ‘metal night’ every last Friday of the month. Most importantly, it has a lovely terrace near the water.

Café de Tapperij. Verdronkenoord 114. An old-fashioned pub where you can enjoy a great pancake or simple lunch every afternoon. A great meeting place at night and a party with excellent DJs every weekend.

Café Unie XS. Koorstraat 12. A stylish, modern cafe with great wines and a menu with attractive small snacks.

't Kantoor. Verdronkenoord 110. A cosy and popular cafe in a beautiful old building near the Visbanken and Platte Stennenbrug bridge.

Proeflokaal de Boom. Houttil 1. A traditional cafe for those who love life beneath the Beer Museum in Alkmaar. They serve many specialty beers and have a barge for a terrace in summer.

Mojo's. Houttil 18. This great cafe/restaurant occupies a stately building on Waagplein square. There is ample of space on several floors. In addition to a good menu this place has a welcoming bar where you can have a drink.
