The Treaty of Utrecht was signed 300 years ago on 11 April 1713. It marked a significant change in world history. Peace and freedom proved to be negotiable and this fact will be celebrated with gusto in Utrecht this year. The city will issue a commemorative coin and offer an international programme of art, knowledge and culture

'The Art of making Peace'

From the opening event on 11 April until the end of 2013, Utrecht will commemorate the Peace of Utrecht. The entire city will be buzzing, every street and square, every park and bridge will host concerts and festivals. You can attend plays, lectures and conferences at the theatres.

Although peace may seem a matter of course in Europe, it is greatly dependent on shared ideas and beliefs. 12 April-20 June. 'Toen mijn vader een struik werd'. Musical theatre group Het Filiaal adapted the book with this title (which translates as When my father turned into a shrub) into a beautiful play. Playing at Transformatorhuis Utrecht.

20 June -22 September 'Call of the Mall'. Large-scale art manifestation of national and international artists at Hoog Catharijne shopping mall and Utrecht CS railway station.

21-23 June 'Vrede in de Buurt'. Peace in the neighbourhood, midsummer weekend filled with concerts, festivals and theatre performances throughout the well-known districts of Utrecht.

11-15 July 'Rheingold op de Rijn'. Wagner’s opera Das Rheingold, performed on a ship by 14 top singers and the seventy piece USConcert orchestra.

25 July -21 September 'House of Eutopia'. Impressive installation by the artist Filip Berte on the history and future of Europe. Address: Utrechtse Zeedijk.

20-12 June 'Community Art Conferentie'. Conference in festival style with artists and their projects, which have contributed to peace in violent or post-war regions.

31 August 'VJ op de Dom beats Barok'. Exciting intersection between old and new music. Location : Domkerk and Domplein.

13-22 September 'Festival de Basis' (Celebrating peace, reflecting on war). Stories brought to life by professionals and amateur artists on the former military airbase of Soesterberg.
