Venison and mushrooms

Hunting season in Gelderland starts in autumn, about mid-October. Hunters are allowed to hunt for hares, pheasants, wild ducks and roebuck in this period so you can try wonderful venison dishes in many restaurants. Of course autumn is also the season of mushrooms: chanterelles, oyster and champagne mushrooms, many types and sizes are available. Be careful when picking wild mushrooms because many are inedible. So we recommend going to a good restaurant instead of picking your own.

Gelderland’s wine

It may come as a surprise but the province of Gelderland produces many good white and red wines. Several vineyards will welcome you, offering a guided tour, wine tastings and of course their wines for sale. There is a beautiful wine route that will take you to a number of wonderful vineyards on a bicycle.

Editors’ tip: Visit the Oogsthoek vineyard in Zelhem. Their wines have won international and national awards.

Apples and strawberries

Gelderland may boast the biggest number of apple trees in Holland. It is a green province filled with fruit trees and there are several places where you can pick your own apples and strawberries. A wonderful outing for the children.

These are our three recommended nurseries where you can pick your own fruit:

1.  Hof van Twello

Starting mid-June, this nursery invites you to come pick strawberries on an 18 hectare field. Later in the season they also offer berries, raspberries and blackberries (until September).

Address: Rijksstraatweg 17, Twello

2. Fruitbedrijf de Hoenderik

Pick strawberries from mid-June. From the end of August to the end of September, you can also pick apples and pears every Saturday.

Address: Lingedijk 180, Tricht

3. Groot Antink

Starting mid-June you can pick several kinds of fruit, including berries, raspberries and strawberries. They also sell home-made jam (based on grandmother’s recipe) and other wonderful regional products at their own farm shop. Highly recommended!

Address: Vredenseweg 106, Groenlo

Please note that picking periods may deviate from the dates mentioned above due to weather conditions. Always ask the nursery or the local tourist office before planning your visit.
