Investiture in the Nieuwe Kerk

According to tradition, Prince Willem-Alexander’s investiture will occur in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam on 30 April 2013. This is where all Dutch kings and queens have been installed for centuries and the tradition will be honoured this time, as well. The many preparations are already underway and if possible, a special exhibition on royal investitures will be organised before that time.

The ceremony

It goes without saying that a range of official ceremonies are involved in the royal succession. For instance, the ‘abdication’ will occur at the Royal Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam. By signing the Deed of Abdication Queen Beatrix will officially abdicate from the throne, after which Prince Willem-Alexander will sign the Deed to become the new Dutch monarch.

On towards the Nieuwe Kerk

After the abdication at the Royal Palace, Willem-Alexander’s formal investiture will occur in the Nieuwe Kerk. He will pledge loyalty to the Constitution in the presence of the government. All of the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives will then pledge their loyalty to the new king. And only then will Willem-Alexander officially be the new King of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
