DISCOVER VOLENDAM, MONNICKENDAM AND SPAKENBURG Take a step back in time, venture on a voyage of discovery into the past. Dressed in traditional Dutch costume, you'll be immortalized in a photograph in Volendam, an old fishing village on the original Zuiderzee! Traditional dress plays an even greater role in Spakenburg, where it is still a part of everyday life. You'll become acquainted with Spakenburg's fascinating history, traditions and traditional dress in the 't Vurhuus museum. DISCOVER LELYSTAD AND HUIZEN The wearing of typical regional or local costume began back in the Middle Ages and was customary along the Zuiderzee until quite recently. The traditional dress of Huizen has more or less vanished from the street scene, but can still be admired in detail in the cultural-historical museums. During the morning, you'll learn about the history of the shipping industry by visiting the Batavia shipyard ยท Nationaal Scheepshistorisch Centrum in Lelystad. Here the replica of the 17th century ship the Batavia lies anchored. You could also learn more about the former polders at the Nieuw Land Poldermuseum in Lelystad and the strugle against the water and the reclaiming of the new land of Flevoland.DISCOVER KAMPEN AND GIETHOORN From Hanseatic town to Green VeniceThe Hanseatic town of Kampen continues to radiate its former powerful trade position to this very day. Lacquer ware, wood, beer, salt, grain and numerous other goods were shipped to and from this town from across the entire world. Life in Giethoorn was an active one, as can be seen by the narrow waterways and countless picturesque bridges. Trade here was done in peat and reed. Both golden towns offer visitors plenty to see. A tour by pedal boat, canoe, low-noise boat or treasure hunt by punt is an experience of a lifetimeDISCOVER ELBURG AND SPAKENBURG Hunting for Treasure around the ZuiderzeeThe old Zuiderzee has not existed in name for many years now, though the reputation of this enormous cultural gold mine comes to life every single day in the old towns of Elburg and Spakenburg. Now you can discover the treasures of the Zuiderzee! The 13th-century fortified town of Elburg, surrounded by ramparts, canals teeming with fish and remainders of the town wall, it is a town much worth a visit. The Middle Ages can still be felt in many of the streets and picturesque alleyways. A guide will take you on a walking tour along such interesting monumental buildings as the Weduwenhofje, the Weeshuis orphanage, the Vischpoort, the former Agnietenklooster convent and along the only winding street in Elburg, called the Kromme Steeg. The Great or St. Nicolaaskerk church can also be visited if desired. In Spakenburg you'll take a lovely trip on an old fishing boat from the old Spakenburg harbor.
