| | | | | | | THE ARTIST JOPIE HUISMAN The artist and bones & ragman Jopie Huisman is largely responsible for the fame of Workum. Its museum full of autodidactic paintings and famous drawings is certainly not to be missed.
SHIPBUILDING AND POTTERY But also, as one of the oldest towns in Friesland, Workum should not be forgotten for its shipbuilding industry which has existed side by side the pottery industry for over three centuries. Of the many potters existed who used to manufacture the typical brown Workum pottery with yellow ochre handles in ‘Pothûswyk’, few are left to see.
SERIOUS SKUTSJES COMPETITION One thing that will perhaps ring a bell is the ‘Strontrace and Beurtveer’ event. This competition serves as a good reminder of the times when Workum was still an important trading town, with its cargo ships and ‘skûtsjes’.
GUILDS AND SHIPPING The St. Gertrudis Church is a magnificent church and is made up of two parts: the tower and the church. This church houses eight guild litters. The beautiful paintings and wall plates will show you which trades were performed by the people who were carried to their graves on these litters. Museum Warkums Erfskip is situated at the beautiful square in the centre of Workum. This museum shows the troubled times of the shipping and earthenware industry. |
