Make your own VOC ship

During the 17th century many sailing ships sailed the Zuyder Zee as well as the world's main seas and oceans. They traveled to faraway, exotic lands. The VOC, the United East India Company, was one of the largest companies in The Golden Circle in those long-gone days. The ships sailed to Asia to buy spices, beautiful materials, gold and porcelain.
Build your own ship to conquer the seven seas!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SHIP

You need:
  • a thick piece of cardboard
  • paper or pieces of material in a range of colors for the sails
  • long kebab skewers
  • 3 pieces of cork - these are quite easy to make by cutting the cork of a wine bottle in three pieces. Do ask your Mum or Dad to help you with this.
  • glue
  • a pair of scissors
  • coloring pencils and felt-tip pens
  • sequins, colored sand, paper chains, pieces of cloth, cotton balls, etc.

To make this three-master first print the cut-out and draw it on a thick piece of cardboard in the color of your choice. Cut the cut-out along the thick lines. Next you fold the line with the dashes (- - - - - - ). Glue the tabs together and the first part of your ship is ready!

You can make the masts with the long skewers. Cut the sails from pieces of thin paper or small bits of material. Attach these to the skewers (see the example) and your sails are all ready. Glue the three pieces of cork onto the bottom of your ship where you wish to place the sails. It is best to spread these out across the bottom of the ship. Stick the skewers with the sails in the pieces of cork and your sails are ready for departure.

    TRY THIS TOO
You can turn this ship into a proper trading vessel or man-of-war with ropes, lovely wood carvings or cannons on deck. Use paper, rope, sequins, sand or paper streamers and your imagination to create your own ship. Add a finishing touch: your own coat of arms on the sails.

Good luck and, who knows, we may meet somewhere on the huge ocean while hunting for the treasures of The Golden Circle!
