International influences

Holland Art Cities starts at the end of 2008 with the theme ‘International Influences’. The Dutch have explored the world, and foreigners have come to our country from all corners of the globe. There has always been much interest in events elsewhere in Europe; as such, Holland can be considered a kind of crossroads. This has been reflected in art, culture and science. A highlight of Holland Art Cities is the opening of the Amsterdam Hermitage in June 2009. Visitors can become acquainted with the entire collection of the ‘parent museum’ in Saint Petersburg at the temporary exhibitions that are being mounted.

Special presentations

Nine museums in four cities put together special presentations featuring the theme 'International Influences'. The Kunsthal Rotterdam, for example, spotlights one of the most renowned 20th-century sculptors, Alberto Giacometti, with a major retrospective. The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam presents 150 important works that demonstrate the significance of the scholar Erasmus in Europe. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam shows works by Van Gogh, with a focus on twilight, evening and night scenes.
