A new Perspective - Cézanne, Picasso and Mondriaan
The Gemeentemuseum, The Hague
October 17, 2009 through January 24, 2010
For the first time since 1956, the works of Cézanne, Picasso and Mondriaan are on display in a Dutch museum. The Gemeentemuseum in The Hague devotes this unique exposition to the father of modern art, Paul Cézanne. His paintings are shown alongside works by Pablo Picasso, who considered himself the artistic heir of Cézanne, and Piet Mondriaan, who was strongly influenced by both artists.
Cézanne, Picassso and Mondriaan together in The Hague
The fact that works by these three artists are mounted in one single exhibit, is truly unique. Never before could museum visitors see works by Cézanne, Picasso and Mondriaan alongside one another. The paintings are on loan from international collections, such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Art Museum Basel and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The exhibition is sponsored by Shell Nederland B.V.
Top Exhibit about the Evolution in Modern Art in The Hague
Unlike his impressionist contemporaries, Cézanne (1839-1906) uses the geometric shapes in nature (cone, ball and cylinder) as his point of departure. These are some of the foundations on which Picasso (1881-1973) elaborated. In addition, the exhibit shows that both Picasso and Cézanne were of paramount importance to the development of Mondriaan (1872-1944). The evolution of Impressionism, via Cubism to abstract work and to the early stages of Modernism, is clearly demonstrated in “Cézanne-Picasso-Mondriaan”. The Gemeentemuseum is very proud to present “A new Perspective - Cézanne-Picasso-Mondriaan” from fall 2009. This exhibit in Gemeentemuseum The Hague is expected to be the top exhibit of 2009.

Description
Where Cézanne stops, Picasso goes on, as the exhibition Cézanne/Picasso in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag at the end of 2009 will illustrate. Unlike his Impressionist contemporaries, Cézanne - whom Picasso respectfully called Monsieur Cézanne - uses the geometric essence of shapes in nature (cone, ball and cylinder) as his starting point. With these, and other shapes, he establishes the foundations that Picasso falls back on, with which he enters into dialogue and on which he elaborates.
