Delft Blue

Delftware is world-famous. The porcelain has its origins in the 17th century. The ceramics factories Royal Delft (1653), the Delft Pottery De Delftse Pauw and De Candelaer continue the tradition of hand-painted Delftware to this day. You can visit their factories to witness the process. Delft’s rich past has generated a wide range of modern ceramicists and galleries.

The House of Orange

Delft and the House of Orange-Nassau, the Dutch Royal Family, have had close links for many centuries. It started in 1572 when Prince William of Orange (1533-1584), Count of Nassau, stayed with his family and court in the Sint-Agathaklooster on a regular basis, because he believed himself to be safe within the fortified city. However, the founder of the Dutch monarchy died in the Convent of Saint Agatha in 1584 when he was shot by Balthasar Gerards. You can still see the bullet holes in what is now the Museum Het Prinsenhof. He was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. Since those days, 46 members of the House of Orange have found their final resting place in the vaults of this church.

Vermeer

The painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) is without doubt the most famous citizen of Delft of all time. His world-famous masterpieces are exhibited in museums all over the world. The artist lived and worked with his family in various places in the centre of Delft, where he found his inspiration. In many sites in the city you can meet Vermeer. For example, you can visit the Vermeer Centrum Delft for a multimedia introduction to the painter and his city. You can also go on a Vermeer walk along all the sites in the city that are linked to this most renowned painter. Vermeer was buried in the Oude Kerk in Delft.
