Haarlem
The town centre of Haarlem is very beautiful. Even if the number of tourists may have risen since the Middle Ages, the calm streets in this picturesque town have not changed much.
One of the nicest sights is definitely the gothic church St. Bavo. In the historical centre you will find many attractions next to each other. There are around twenty “hofjes” – exquisite small gardens worthy of a visit – and some of the best museums in Holland. Teylers Museum, for example, which is the oldest museum in the country.
Just outside the museum there is the very special hotel Spaarne 8 with only two rooms. Of course there are cheaper alternatives as well. Haarlem’s local tourist board (VVV) will help you with booking and information. Something else that will catch your attention while walking through Haarlem is the abundance of shops. It should not come as a surprise then that Haarlem has been chosen as the best shopping town in Holland. The town also has the most restaurants per inhabitant after Maastricht.
