Madurodam
Every year, more than 1.2 million people enjoy a visit to the miniature town of Madurodam. Famous buildings, both historic and modern, busy traffic, trains, planes and polders, everything is built to a scale of 1:25. Madurodam was built with the capital put up by Mr. and Mrs. Maduro and was first opened in 1952 by Princess Beatrix. She was mayor to the town for more than 25 years and is still patron. The miniature town has its own city council, comprised of pupils from different secondary schools in The Hague. Madurodam has recently undergone extensive expansions and in addition to the town now also features the ever-lasting battle fought by the Dutch with the water. The entrance to Madurodam consists of a lighthouse, a symbolic wave and two dikes. The park features new miniature constructions to explain the past, the present and the future of Dutch towns and cities in greater detail. The indoor sand sculpture show "Sand World" tells the history of the battle waged in the Netherlands against the water. In short, Madurodam shows the Netherlands in a nutshell.
