Das Rheingold

The epic 15-hour opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner is finally playing in Holland! Planning for a four-year long performance, this year Nationale Reisopera is performing the first of the four-part saga, Das Rheingold, itself a continuous 2.5 hours of revolutionary music that will sway your imagination and emotions even more intensely than The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, whose story actually found its original inspiration in Wagner’s monumental masterpiece.

Gargantuan gods, gargantuan production

The story is old and legendary. You will find a dwarf who created the ring with forbidden gold from the Rhine to conquer all the world, and the Norse gods and giants fighting to obtain it by kidnapping and trickery. Love is renounced, a curse is unleashed, and the gods lead themselves to doom with their own greed. Das Rheingold lays the stage beautifully for this four-part epic with fluid music depicting the Rhine and its river maidens, and rich, grandiose motifs for the battling gods, all supported by one of the largest orchestras you will ever live to see.
