The Golden Circle
Historic trail exposes Dutch nautical heritage.
The Golden Circle
For centuries, Holland ruled the waves. Navigation and trade are in the Dutch people’s blood. Many merchant ships from the Zuyder Zee, once a rough inland sea tamed in 1932 by the “Afsluitdijk”. The towns and villages around this lake, now the “IJsselmeer”, tell the true story about the Dutch and the sea.
In 1602 important Dutch cities joined forces and founded the United East India Company (VOC). They traded with Indonesia and other countries in the Far East, bringing spices and porcelain on their ships to Holland. An era now referred to as the “Golden Age”, still reflected in magnificent buildings, harbours and art. Amsterdam offers mainstream Dutch heritage. But to discover the hidden treasures, you should visit The Golden Circle.
Historical trail exposes Dutch nautical heritage
The Golden Circle is a historic, nautical trail exposing the real Dutch heritage. Discovery starts in Amsterdam. Then visit the fishing villages of Marken and Volendam, and two former VOC towns, Hoorn and Enkhuizen! From Enkhuizen take the ferry to the Friesland province, which was an independent state long before the VOC, enjoying a flourishing trade with the vikings.
Don’t miss Urk. Once an island now surrounded by an entirely new province: Holland literally created Flevoland half a century ago! Before returning to Amsterdam, see the VOC ship replicas at the Batavia Yard and the fortified city of Naarden.
