The Hague School and the Modern Dutch Landscape
Kunsthal Rotterdam
12 September - 6 December 2009
New horizons in 19th century Holland
Beautiful paintings not only capture our awe, but they tell history, too – like the new exhibition coming to Kunsthal Rotterdam with its brilliant collection of paintings and photographs from the late 19th century. Starting in September “New Horizons” is displaying works from Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Neue Pinakothek in Munich to show you how the landscape of Holland was forever changed with the advent of industrialization.
Historic paintings and photography
Willem Roelofs, Anton Mauve, and Johan Weissenbruch are among the famous painters of The Hague School who recorded this historic transformation of the Dutch landscape, mirrored by the rare works of photographers such as Pieter Oosterhuis and Henri de Louw. They show us how channels, railroads, bridges, and telegraph poles forever altered the romantic natural past and paved way for the complex cities today that are magnificent in their own ways.
