At the Russian Court - Palace and Protocol in the 19th Century
Hermitage Amsterdam
20 June 2009 - 31 Jan 2010
The opening exhibition of the Hermitage Amsterdam with its more than 1800 objects promises to be one of the biggest shows ever organized in Holland. The exhibition presents the sumptuous court life of the tsars in the 19th century, with its festive balls, its glorious costumes, and its rigid protocol.
Nineteenth-century court life at Hermitage Amsterdam
For this opening show, the State Hermitage went all the way: hundreds of spectacular ball gowns, beautiful portraits by Repin and Winterhalter, unique furniture and impressive jewelry, and precious stones and chandeliers have been lent to the Hermitage Amsterdam. Together they tell the story of one of the most dazzling and brilliant courts in 19th-century Europe.
One side of the exhibition focuses on the official protocol with its public display of power and wealth; the other presents the wonderful dinners, parties and thematic balls that come wit the luxury of Russian emperors.
