Trafalgar Square sparkled bright orange on Saturday 16 April for Holland House, in association with easyJet. The free entry festival, which is a celebration in honour of the Dutch Queen’s birthday, provided a great kick off to the Royal wedding celebrations in 2 weeks. Over 50,000 people, dressed up in the Dutch national colour of orange, are estimated to have joined in the festivities over the course of the day.
The greatly anticipated grand final of the easyjet and holland.com Double Dutch skipping challenge took place during the event. Four teams from all different corners of the country showed off their amazing skills. Eventually, after a nail biting final, the team from Kingston, Surrey was crowned the Double Dutch skipping winner of 2011. The team won a city break to Amsterdam including accommodation and return easyJet flights along with orange iPod nanos.
Holland House always brings the best of Holland to London; Dutch culture, Dutch lifestyle, a warm and welcoming nature - and it certainly did not disappoint this year. On the main stage, the day kicked off with Storybox, followed by Boris, Typhoon & New Cool Collective, De Coronas and Baskerville, who completed the fantastic line-up and really got the crowd partying.
Also, art lovers crossed the square to experience the fabulous 17th century Dutch Masters on show at the National Gallery. While back on the square, the kids had great fun in the kid’s corner where they enjoyed theatre performances, clog painting and balloon modellers.
Visitors to Holland House also enjoyed the many authentic Dutch delicacies on offer such as stroopwafels (caramel waffles), cheese, poffertjes (mini-pancakes), Dutch fries with a selection of sauces and broodje beenham (Dutch bacon).
During Holland House 2010, Chiswick locals Ben and Tamsin Nijhof met each
other and fell in love. They got married not long after and came back to Holland
House this year to mark their first anniversary. The Netherlands Board of
Tourism & Conventions helped them celebrate by offering a second honeymoon
to Amsterdam with complimentary easyJet flights and 2 nights at the Park Hotel
Amsterdam.
