Traces of a rich past
Maastricht can justly refer to itself as one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The city itself is a rich outdoor historical museum. All around you in the streets, you will find reminders of the Maastricht that once served as a Roman border checkpoint city, as a pilgrimage city in the Middle Ages, a garrison city, and as the city where the Dutch Industrial Revolution began. Europeans know Maastricht as the city where the Treaty of Maastricht was signed in 1992, leading to the birth of the euro. And Maastricht is still making history: at the end of 2008, Maastricht decided to compete for the title of ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2018.
