ROTTERDAM ART CITY

In 2009 and 2010, the four largest cities in Holland are taking part in a large-scale art and cultural event called ‘Holland Art Cities’. A cultural extravaganza showcasing more art and culture per square mile than any other country on earth. The top ten museums in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht have joined forces to put together an unprecedented art spectacle. The museums will present exhibitions divided in three themes: ‘International Influences’, ‘Young: Modern and Contemporary Art and Design’ and ‘Dutch Masters’.

ABSEILING FROM THE EUROMAST

May – September 2009
 
Treat yourself to a dazzling view of Rotterdam! At a height of 100 metres you just step over the railing to go straight down, where there is no wall to put your feet against. Rotterdam’s Euromast is the only place in Europe where abseiling can be done in this way. Abseiling is possible every Saturday and Sunday, except for the last Sunday of the month: on these days the public can slide down on a rope. Find out more about the Euromast

GERGIEV FESTIVAL ROTTERDAM

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the world's best symphony orchestras, annually performs the Gergiev Festival. A cross-border symphonic festival of international renown that attracts some 25,000 visitors each year. Broad, interdisciplinary programming around this years’ theme Eternal youth: opera, symphonic concerts and chamber music, as well as films and expositions. Presented at various locations throughout Rotterdam. Artistic director is top conductor Valery Gergiev. Visit the Gergiev Festival's website. 

WORLD PORT DAYS

The Wereldhavendagen (World Port Days), a large, annual maritime event, is a festive and adventurous opportunity for its visitors to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the Port and Industrial area. Visitors are offered a wide range of activities, such as ship tours, naval activities, demonstrations, seminars, excursions, exhibitions, music, preliminary work, to mention just a few. For more information visit wereldhavendagen.nl 

THE ART OF FASHION (Rotterdam Art City)

Fashion as a source of inspiration for art and vice versa! A large international fashion exhibition about how fashion draws close to the visual arts in many ways. The exhibition shows how the borders between art and fashion are becoming ever more blurred and how both disciplines continually influence each other. Featuring work by Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan, Lucy Orta, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Bless, Martin Margiela, Viviane Sassen, Inez van Lamsweerde, Matthew Barney, Walter van Beirendonck and Dominique Gonzales Foerster. Especially for this exhibition, five fashion designers will be awarded with exclusive assignments as part of the H+F Fashion on the Edge programme. Visit the website of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. 

4TH INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE ROTTERDAM

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam is a bi-annual international event with exhibitions, a city programme, lectures, awards, a master class, etc. on architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning.
