Caves of Mount St. Pieter

Dating back to Roman times, the caves are an complicated labyrinth of thousands of man-made passages. The caves are the result of centuries of excavation of sandstone. The walls are covered with drawings and signatures, some of which go back to pre-historic times.

 

Casemates

Between 1575 and 1825, mining activities created a network of galleries at Maastricht’s western limits. These mining galleries were used in times of siege for subterranean approach and elimination of the enemy. The casemates is a unique military monument with its domed vaults, impressive shellproof refuges, powder rooms, plunging steps and a variety of galleries.

 

Baslicas of our Lady and St. Servatius

Visit these renowned basisilicas and you might be lucky enough to hear one of the local choirs perform! Inside you’ll find a large number of arts and crafts, including richly embroidered copes and chasubles.

 

River cruise

What better way to explore Maastricht than from the water? The various river boats sail throughout summer (incl. bank holidays and most weekends) and take you past Mount St.Pieter, the hill with the famed limestone caves and vast array of locks and bridges.

Find your way through the huge maze to the raised platform in the centre where you’ll have an amusing view of all the other people trying to get where you are. Other great attractions in the South Limburg area are the recently opened Zoo Gaia Park and Mondo Verde, the Gardens of the World, one of Holland's most striking gardens featuring flora, fauna and landscaping influences from around the world.

 

For some real Winter Fun, visit SnowWorld in Landgraaf. It’s Holland largest indoor winter sports resort and now boasts 3 ski slopes, the longest being 520 m long.
