How and what can architects and urbanists contribute to the way we live in cities? What is the Open City? How do people work, think, dream and act there? And why is it urgent to re-imagine the Open City?

4th International Architecture Institute Rotterdam

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), held every two years, focuses on architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture. During the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam from 24 September 2009 through 10 January 2010 the visitor will be confronted to Open City: Designing Coexistence.

Open City: designing coexistence

The conviction of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam is that architecture can and must contribute to solving some of society’s most complex and pressing problems. The ‘Open City’ tries to achieve an ideal balance between integration and segregation, toward a city where different communities and groups can live and work together. Exactly the dynamic relationship between citizens form the base of what is called: urbanity or the urban civilization.
